Released in 1994, the Sony WM-FX403 is what happens when Sony’s engineers were told to “make a cassette player,” then collectively ignored the assignment and built a tiny mission control console instead. Every button on the front seems to have a purpose, every beep sounds strangely important and the LCD has the quiet confidence of a device that believes you’re the one who needs the instruction manual. Somewhere in 1994 this Walkman woke a commuter before sunrise, survived an entire office career fueled by coffee and mixtapes, then spent three decades hiding in a drawer waiting for someone who still understood that pressing PLAY was more satisfying than tapping a screen. Ours comes from our private collection and is in mint condition, with its gorgeous dark silver finish, razor-sharp lettering and pristine display looking almost impossible for a machine that’s over thirty years old. It isn’t just another Walkman. It’s the cassette equivalent of a Volvo wagon with 400,000 miles that somehow still judges every new car it passes.
