the story
The Pocket Wingman. We have a soft spot for the Sony WM-FX41. We had one ourselves, back in the day. Picture a chilly fall afternoon in 1993. After the last bell, your secret crush catches you at the doors, slips a mixtape into your hand and says, “The third song.” You click the cassette into the FX41, put on your headphones and head out, walking beneath the trees dropping their orange and brown leaves. At first, you walk at your usual pace. Then the third song begins. It's the song you'd mentioned loving weeks ago, certain nobody heard. That explains everything. You slow down without meaning to. At the corner where you'd normally turn toward home, you keep walking straight, the little black Sony tucked in your coat. By the time you reach your porch, you still don't know what to say tomorrow. You do know you'll listen again tonight, probably nonstop. The little Sony keeps playing both sides while you decide whether that song was a confession or just excellent taste. You fall asleep before reaching a verdict. By morning, the batteries are dead. Your overthinking, unfortunately, is not. Decades later, this made-in-Japan legend has found its way to the APD bench with a few visible marks and a gift for making the third song feel like the beginning of something.
